Those of you who have been following us along on our journey know that we bought our first house a couple of months ago. We knew there needed to be work done and we were up for the challenge. Now, don't get me wrong, the home was completely livable and finished, it was just not quite our style. Here are a couple things we changed for very little cost but made such a huge impact on making our house feel more like home.
1. Our front door lock - before moving into our house, we had used a code to enter our apartment for years, so using a key felt weird. This is the very first change we made. We ordered this keypad lock for under $50 off of Amazon and installed it the very day it arrived.
2. Door knobs and hinges - ok, this was a big one! We had old gold door knobs and hinges that really dated our home. For around $200 we were able to change out all of the knobs and hinges in our house. This made a huge difference in how all of our doors looked. I found a great deal on Wayfair for around 30% off retail price.
3. Kitchen cabinet knobs - We remodeled our kitchen but kept our cabinets to save on costs; however, yet again, the knobs seemed to date it. To go with our modern farmhouse style, we purchased sleek black knobs from Ikea. This little switch made all the difference! And better yet, it was under $50.
4. Lighting - When we toured the house for the first time there was an extra large light fixture in the living area that was not to be included in the sale. It was replaced by a small fixture that (yet again) didn't fit our style. We found the perfect fixture at Costco for under $30. Additionally, the light fixtures on our stairwell were also a lot older so we decided to switch them out with these gorgeous farmhouse fixtures ($28 each) from The Home Depot and topped it off with vintage bulbs to warm up the space ($5 each).
5. Floating shelves - Now this one is both a space saver and stylish piece. These floating shelves from Target are the perfect addition to our little nook upstairs. We wanted a space to display a couple books, candles and maybe even some succulents, and this was the perfect solution. These were $35 each and we ended up using 3. We plan on purchasing 2 more for our quarter bath off of the kitchen and replacing our above the toilet storage. Additionally, we added a floating wine shelf from Crate and Barrel in our dining area that can hold around 4-5 wine bottles and 6 wine glasses.
These small changes sure made a big difference for us. Let us know what you think of them in the comments below.
